Unit Conversion

Have you ever gone to a store to buy fishing gear, only to find the packaging listed units you don’t normally use (like oz or ft), leaving you confused? While experienced anglers can look at these and immediately understand what they need to buy, it can be a real hurdle for beginners. You could ask a store clerk, but sometimes it’s just hard to bring it up. There’s probably a conversion chart somewhere in the store, but it might not be right where you are.
That’s where this app comes in. This app is a utility tool that uses AR (Augmented Reality) to intuitively measure and calculate various units, with a focus on fishing.
It’s easy to use: just hold your camera over the fishing gear packaging, tap the area you want to check, and the scan will begin. The app reads the numbers and units printed there, converts them to the relevant units, and displays the results on the screen.
It also features a calculator; simply enter a number, and it will convert the units and display the result. Of course, it supports basic arithmetic operations as well.
One handy feature is the “Reel Backing Calculator,” which lets you quickly check how much backing line you need.
There is also a conversion chart available for your reference.

  1. Scan Feature (AR Conversion)
Point your camera at the numbers printed on fishing tackle packaging to convert them in real time.
    ・Basic Usage:
i.Select the “Scan” scan tab at the bottom of the screen.
ii.Tap the area where you want to read the values and units.
iii.Only the text around the tapped area will be scanned, and the conversion results will appear on the screen.
    ・Features:
◦Precision Scan: Since it reads only the area around the tap, it prevents misrecognition of unrelated text.
◦Ripple Effect: A cyan ripple appears at the tap location, making it easy to see at a glance where the target is.
◦Detailed View: Tap the conversion result within the green frame on the screen to view a list of conversions to additional units in the bottom sheet.
◦If the surroundings are dark, turning on the flashlight enables more accurate reading.
    ・Unit Detection:
     ◦Auto Detection Mode (AUTO):
ON: Automatically identifies the unit category. (e.g., “oz” is “weight,” ‘ft’ is “length”).
OFF: Scans only the categories selected in the “Settings” tab. This is useful when you want to read only specific units from a crowded label.
  2. Calculator Function
Performs arithmetic operations while simultaneously converting to all major units.
    •Basic Usage:
    i.「Select the “Calculator” calculator tab.
ii.Tap the “Change Category” button and select a category.
iii. From the options at the top, select the “Current Unit” for the value you want to enter.
iv.Enter a number using the keypad (or calculate an expression).
v.The conversion results for all other relevant units are displayed in a two-column list in the center of the screen.
    •Features:
◦Simultaneous Conversion: Enter a single value to instantly calculate conversions from, for example, “meters” to “inches,” “feet,” “centimeters,” and more.
◦Sign Inversion (±): Supports negative input, which is useful for temperature calculations and similar scenarios.
  3. Reel Backing Calculator
This tool accurately calculates the amount of backing required based on the main line you want to spool onto your reel.
    •Basic Instructions:
    i.Select the “Tools” tool tab.
ii.Use the switch at the top to select the unit for line weight (No. / lb) and the unit for length (m / yd).
iii.Enter the “Reel Capacity,” “Main Line Specifications,” and “Backing Line Diameter.”
iv.The required backing length will be automatically displayed at the bottom.
    •Note:
◦If the main line exceeds the reel’s capacity, a warning message will appear in red.
  4. Conversion Chart
Select the “Conversion Chart” table tab.
    •Line: Nylon/Fluorocarbon
◦Explanation: This is a conversion table between “go” (a Japanese unit of line thickness) and “lb” (pounds), the internationally used unit of strength.
◦Note: While “1 go = 4 lb” is generally considered the standard guideline, the strength may vary depending on the product, even for the same “go” number.
    •Line: PE (Polyethylene)
◦Explanation: A guide to PE line sizes and strength (lb).
◦Note: PE line is significantly stronger than nylon or fluorocarbon; even a size 1 PE line has a strength of approximately 20 lb. Since there are significant differences depending on the manufacturer and the number of strands (4-strand, 8-strand, etc.), be sure to check the specifications on the package.
    •Sinkers: Size → Grams
◦Explanation: This is a conversion chart between the traditional Japanese “size” and “g (grams).”
◦Fun Fact: A size 1 sinker is based on the traditional Japanese unit “ichimonme” (1 monme) = 3.75g.
    •Lures: Ounces → Grams
◦Explanation: This is a conversion chart for “oz (ounces)” and “g (grams),” commonly used for imported lures.
◦Formula: 1 oz is approximately 28.35 g. The chart includes commonly used fractional notations such as 1/4 oz, 3/8 oz, and 1/2 oz.
    •Length: Feet/Inches → cm
◦Explanation: This is a conversion chart for “ft (feet)” and “in (inches)”—used to measure rod length—and “cm (centimeters).”
    ◦Conversion: 1 ft = 30.48 cm, 1 in = 2.54 cm.
  5. Settings
    Select the “Settings” setting tab.
•Categories to Use: Here, you can switch between the categories (length, weight, line size, temperature, etc.) used in the “Scan” and “Calculator” tabs.
•Save Settings: The last selected units and categories are automatically saved and will be retained the next time you launch the app.
